After several discussions and even more suggestions, we’re finally happy to announce the details for the first official LightWeightHeavy Remix Battle. Initially, we tossed around the idea of creating a live beat battle on the show, but it seemed like a huge undertaking. It’s tough to get everyone to participate when there’s only a two hour window to work within. Eventually, we decided to steal 50 Cent’s brilliant idea, and just place an acapella out there to let the producers work their magic with it.

When it came down to choosing an actual song for everyone to work with, I knew we wanted to go with Nas, given his penchant for picking shitty beats. *ducks hail of bullets from the GBM staff* Instead of going with a beat that is begging for improvement, we decided to choose one that sets the bar high with it’s original production, and force the beatsmiths to really bring their A-game.

So here you have it – Nas’ “Purple”, my favorite song off Lost Tapes, stripped down to just the vocals. In my time on the hip hop blog comment section circuit, I’ve seen a lot of shit talking about how “nobody is fucking with my beats” from various screen names, so here is your chance. Submit your entries by May 1st (of THIS year, slackers) and we will play the submissions on LWHRadio.

If you win, you’ll be the lucky recipient of a dime bag of Ohio’s finest dirt weed, a pack of g-unit wife beaters, and bragging rights amongst your internet peers as the champion of the boards.

DOWNLOAD: Nas – Purple Acapella

and yo – Salaam Remi, I know you are probably lurking, but don’t bother jumping into this competition, fam. I don’t wanna hear Nas over your shit ever again.

The mpd 32 is a great piece of hardware man, the fact that you can sample mp3 songs means you can save a lot of money instead of sampling vinyls. Sure sampling vinyls is the original way, but I’m a student so I went for the economic option of an mpd rather than the mpc. But the mpd 32 feels and looks great, the pads aren’t bad either, fairly sensitive but not as soft and ‘light’ as mpc pads, but this is a matter of opinion of the user.

As for the midi keyboard, them lil’ 25 key ones are great for portability and for creating melodies and basslines. I recommend both pieces of equipment.
    Hope this helps

this would have been much more potent if it was grammatically correct LMAO

  24. tempo is around 97bpm

  25. Also I got an M Audio midi keyboard with 25 keys for like £75 which I think was a worthwhile investment.

And you should have kept up with the piano and drums, I’m currently renting out a house for a year whilst at university and 2 of my house mates play drums and the keys all the time and I’ve started learning cause keys & drums are just >>>>

yeah no MPC for me for a while jsut the MPK maybe.
i like the drum pad cuz i work well with just just tapping my hands, i hit rhythms better, but i want some keys to allow for somethign else and for ease

can i use mp3s and stuff with the MPK? well actually, sampled parts of mp3s or is just preset drms or whatnot.

    @RNC

MPK mini laptop 25 key 8 drum pad with knobs, is $100 brand new.

some people get the LPK ($65) and get drum pad sep ($50-60).

Exactly. That just shows how deeply hurt he truly is. And I honestly don’t believe that it’s a good idea to promote any beef between your faction and his, but. . . well it is what it is. A total lack of acknowledgement on you guys’ part is the deadliest form of ether to someone in Eskay’s shoes right now. Give him the camel goat treatment, so to speak.

Streets Disciple would have been a MUCH better project with LESS Salaam Remi. People cite Made U Look, but that wasn’t even the best song on God’s Son, much less the best beat.

You’re right it wasn’t. But I think about ‘Zone Out’ and I get a bad taste in my mouth. That was my least favorite Salaam Remi beat on God’s Son. But he also did ‘Message to the Feds” and “Nazareth Savage” on Street’s Disciple. Both are ill.

Nevertheless, I prefer Nas on an Alchemist beat…. like ‘Mastermind’. Love that fucking song.
