Public Service Announcement- Philly got the BEST spitters, dead or alive. Period. FACT.
Yo, this is not a comprehensive list of the BEST Philly Rap DVD freestyles (a LOT of the Touch Money, Headshot, and From Da Muscle DVDs are not online, smh.), and I didn’t put some of the larger freestyles (Kaboom vs Steele, NH vs T-Rex, and Reed Dollaz vs Kaboom are right there for your listening pleasure), and just sitting here I found THIS, THIS, and THIS but overall, this 30 track compilation is probably the most accurate representation of the Philly RAP DVD scene (Not Battles— and yea, there is a difference, and a massive one at that), which was, and still is, thriving in the city.
Be clear, the DVD’s STARTED in Philly. Niggas in Philly was scooping dvds, bagging up, and smoking out as niggas went from hood to hood, found the best (or worst in some cases) rappers, gave em a beat (or not), and let em spit— this actually went further the homemade mixtapes artists were pushing, as putting a face to a name or rhyme went further in developing a rappers brand than any mixtape could at the time. The DVD’s promoted the beef, the tension, and the squashed more careers than any diss song could—- FACT.
Anyway, this is missing some of the best Touch Money (Bricks, Caution Mally Franks, NH, Pook Papers, Kaboom) freestyles, the bul MPEE, Frankie Wit Da Grippas, and a couple others who were mainstays on the DVDs during this period (2005-2007), which I consider the golden-era of the DVDs. You had Star (2 Raw From The Streets) as the unquestioned leader— his DVDs had better sound, he had the best rappers (Rico, Peedi, Reed, Chic, Vodka, Ness, etc), and had the best presentation, and you had everyone else. Upstart “labels” Like Headshot Records, Papa Chasa’s, and Touch Money Records released their own DVD’s catering to their own artists, and then you had independent niggas with cameras who pushed their own product.
Whatever— Download, enjoy, and don’t get pissed at me about the sound quality— these freestyles are pulled DIRECTLY from the DVDs, so the sound is as they were when they were recorded. (Don’t front on that Jay Bezel Freestyle either– he BODIED his jawn)
Note: Don’t ask me where State Property is— them niggas didn’t get on the DVD’s unless it was on some interview shit. Only Peedi spit on the DVD’s heavy.
Note 2: Wonder why the figgas ain’t on here? Its cuz this was around the the time SP and MF were beefing heavy (ya know, with Neef getting Spade-O bagged, Dutch riding around trying to kill them niggas, and basically, they stopped rapping and went to the guns, smh.)
